Mexico is
a country with a rich musical tradition. Its great diversity of musical types includes: the exciting music of the Mariachi, "ranchera" music-country
style, the prehispanic heritage of our pre-Colombian past, the romantic sounds of the wonderful Trios, and the sweet tones of the marimba from the southern regions.
Music is with us and reflects our state of mind in practically every moment of our lives.
Within the vast store of Mexican music we find lullabies, birthday songs like "Las Mañanitas",
wedding music, melodies or "corridos" that tell of feats from the time of the Revolution, and even funeral music, played at wakes and burials.
In the Mexico of big cities, rock and pop are very popular. No doubt you have heard Latin rock: Santana,
Mark Anthony, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin... Some of the groups that enjoy wide popularity in Mexico are: Mana, Jaguares, Luis Miguel, and
Maldita Vecindad.
In this section, we include the words in both English and Spanish of some traditional songs, as well as of some that are currently in vogue in Mexico.
A favourite group of Mexican young people is Mana, whose members are from Guadalajara, in
the state of Jalisco. You've probably heard of them. They recently appeared with Carlos Santana in his concerts during his U.S. tour. The following is one of their songs from
their album: Mana Sueños Liquidos.

Sola en el olvido
sola con su espíritu
Sola en el olvido
sola con su
espíritu
huuuu....
|
Alone and forgotten
alone with her soul
alone and forgotten
alone with her
soul
huuuu...
|
Ella despidió a su amor
el partió en un barco
en el muelle de San Blás
El juró que volvería
y empapada en llanto ella juró que esperaría
|
Bid her beloved farewell
as he left on a ship
from the San Blas wharf
He swore he'd come back
and soaked with her tears
she promised she'd wait
|
Miles de lunas pasaron
y siempre estaba en el muelle esperando
|
Thousands of moons went by while she waited on the
wharf
|
Muchas tardes se anidaron
se anidaron en su pelo
y en sus labios
|
Many afternoons nested
nestled in her hair
and lips
|
Llevaba el mismo vestido
y por si él volviera
no se fuera a equivocar
|
She wore the same dress
so when he returned
he would recognize her.
|
Los cangrejos le mordían
su ropaje su tristeza
y su ilusión
|
Crabs nipped at her gown, at her sadness,
and her dreams
|
Y el tiempo escurrió
y sus ojos se le llenaron
de amaneceres
Y del mar se enamoró
y su cuerpo se enraizó
en el muelle
|
So time slipped away
while her eyes filled up with dawns.
And she fell in love
with the sea while her
body took root in the wharf
|
Sola.. Sola en el olvido
Sola... sola con su espíritu
sola... con su amor el mar
sola... en el muelle de San Blás
|
Alone. alone and forgotten
alone... with her soul
alone... with her sea
alone... in the San Blas wharf
|
Su cabello se blanqueó
pero ningún barco
a su amor le devolvía
|
Her hair turned white
but none of the ships
brought back her beloved
|
Y en el pueblo le decían
le decían la loca
del muelle de San Blás
|
In the town they called her
the madwoman of the San Blas wharf
|
Una tarde de Abril
la intentaron trasladar
al manicomio
Nadie la pudo arrancar
y del mar nunca jamás
la separaron
|
One an April afternoon
they tried to put her into
an asylum
No one could uproot her
and from the sea no one could ever take her away
|
Sola.. Sola en el olvido
Sola... sola con su espíritu
sola... con su amor el mar
sola... en el muelle de San Blás
|
Alone. alone and forgotten
alone... with her soul
alone... with her dear sea
alone... on the San Blas wharf
|
Se quedó, se quedó sola, sola
Se quedó, se quedó
con el sol y el mar
Se quedó ahí
se quedó hasta el fin
se quedó ahí
se quedó
en el muelle de San Blás
oh....
sola, sola se quedó
sola sola
|
She was left, she was left Alone... alone
She remained
with the sun and the sea
She stayed there
till the end
she stayed there
she stayed
on the San Blas wharf
oh...
She was left alone
alone , alone,
