Day of the Dead

Hi, my name is Itziar Diez-Canedo.  I am 13 years old and I'm in 7th grade.
I was born in Mexico City.  I think there is no perfect place to live in; there are always positive and negative aspects in any place in the world.

I am very lucky, since I have had the opportunity to live in two places: the US and in Mexico.  I lived in Mexico City until I was seven years old, when I went to live to Key Biscayne, a beautiful island in Florida.  I lived there for three years.     Then, when I was ten, my family and I came back to Mexico City for two years.  Three months ago, we moved back to Key Biscayne and that is where I live now.  Because of being able to live in these two places, I have enjoyed the numerous advantages that these cities have to offer.

When I lived in Mexico, I went to the American School Foundation, where all my studies were in English except for 45 minutes of Spanish every day.  I love the ASF, it has great facilities, wonderful teachers and the teaching system is very modern and practical.  I have many friends there, and the school always organized fun activities and field trips, for example my classmates are traveling to China for ten days next month.

In Key Biscayne, I go to a public school named Key Biscayne Community School.  It is very different from the American School.  For instance, here
we have no recess, all we have is 30 minutes to eat lunch in an indoor cafeteria, whereas in the ASF, we had 1 hour to go outside, practice sports or just hang out with our friends and eat lunch from the delicious snack bar.  Another disadvantage is that the school doesn't have as good facilities, and the teachers are less prepared.  But there is one enormous advantage, that you can go to and from the school in bike, or even by foot, without worrying about violence or delinquency.

When you move from one place to another, in the beginning it is a little bit hard to adjust and make new friends.  Fortunately, I have great friends in
Mexico as well as in Key Biscayne.  In Mexico, my friends are more like me since we share the same background and come from the same place.  A good
thing about making friends in Miami is that you meet kids your age that come from all over the world.  I have friends from: USA, Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela, Cuba, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Korea, etc. and it is very interesting to meet people from different cultures, languages and customs.

Life in Mexico and in Key Biscayne is very different.  In Mexico it is overcrowded, polluted, there is more violence, and it isn't safe.  You are
more threatened to be robbed, kidnapped, etc. Yet in Mexico, there are many good things such as the warmth of people, family, friends, school and food.
In KB, it is safe and peaceful, and you can go around the island alone like if it were your own backyard.  Also the weather and the environment are definitely better, and you can live a peaceful life like if you were on a permanent vacation.

So when people ask me where I prefer to live, I answer both Mexico and Key Biscayne, since you sacrifice some things to get others.

Hello, my name is Maite Diez-Canedo and I am 10 years old. I was born in Mexico City and I recently moved to a small island connected to Miami, U.S.A named Key Biscayne. I have enjoyed both Key Biscayne and Mexico in different ways.

I prefer school in Mexico because, unlike Miami, the teachers are more understanding, the schedule is better organized, there are more facilities and my old friends shared the same type of life I owned.

In Key Biscayne, I only have half hour to eat and I am not allowed to talk with my friends, which I do not like.     Key Biscayne is definitely a better place, taking in count that there is barely any pollution, the ecosystem is very controlled, there is no need to
worry about robbery or kidnapping and I feel free: I can walk around with nobody behind my back taking care of me, and I don't need to worry at all.

In the afternoons, I usually go to the public library and do homework with my friends (something that would be practically impossible in Mexico). I
have a lot of fun with my friends at school because they are from all over the world and so I experience new people and their foreign country.

Although Key Biscayne is paradise, there are some things that it will never have; the kindness of the people, the delicious and healthy food we eat, the culture of the country, but most importantly, my family and the time I spend with them.
Key Biscayne is a tiny little city, full of kids walking around, gorgeous and vivid plants, and numerous wild animals.

Mexico city is the largest city in the world, with an overwhelming amount of people and problems. These two places are completely different yet each one has advantages and disadvantages and are both unique, and have things to learn from and enjoy.
