THE GRADUATION PARTY
The graduation fiesta or party, takes place at the end of the school cycle, for example, at the end of elementary school, junior and senior high, or university. It means that you are going
from one stage to the next.
My graduation will be on June 30. In junior high school, we finish in June, then there are two
months of holidays, and we go on to senior high or preparatoria. It's very exciting for everyone. We're always talking about wanting
to finish secundaria (jr. high) and go on to preparatoria.
We hold a variety of events during the year to raise funds for our graduation, like Colonial
Evenings, school fairs, "tardeadas" or disco afternoons, raffles and lotteries, and so on.
Colonial Evenings are held once a year in each school, and they are attended by "estudiantinas"
from other schools. Each "estudiantina" consists of a group of students who play musical instruments, dress up with costumes similar to the ones used in
colonial time, and sing, in a competition with the musical groups from other schools. Some of them have up to 60 members! In general, the music is
very lively. The event begins with the newer, or lesser known "estudiantinas", and as the afternoon goes on, the groups that are better known because of
they have been performing for a longer time in this kind of event, make their appearance.
There are also mechanical rides, like a fair, during the colonial evenings, as well as a food area
where chicharrones, tostadas, soft drinks, and tacos are sold . All the profits are used to finance the
graduation party.
School Fairs can be held several times a year. The money that is collected is also used for our
graduation party. These fairs are a lot of fun, and they have stands for games of skill such as darts and ringing soft drink bottles with small hoops. Another big
attraction at the fairs are the food and beverage stands.
Tardeadas, as explained in the previous article, are afternoon discotheque dances;
they're really cool, because the atmosphere is usually friendly and everybody has a good time.
We also hold raffles for a lot of things like stereos, CD's or cash, in order to get funds for
graduation.
For some senior high school and university graduations, and sometimes for elementary and secondary
school, the class takes a trip as well as having a party in a hall. Sometimes they go to Cancun, Acapulco, Queretaro, Taxco, and many other fun places.
Queretaro and Taxco are two typically Mexican cities with cobblestone streets, where the customs
and festivities of our ancestors have been preserved.
"Preparatoria", which is the cycle I will be starting in a few months, lasts three
years; in the last year, I have to decide what I'm going to study in college in order to choose my area of admission.
I still don't know what career I will decide on. I'm interested in several things. For example:
computer science, veterinary medicine, cybernetics, ...
For the moment, my mind is on the big GRADUATION PARTY.
See you soon!
